DESCRIPTION:On this date\, in 1941\, war between the United States and Japan was triggered by the attack on Pearl Harbor. The war officially ended on September 2nd\, 1945 at ceremonies onboard the USS Missouri. To celebrate the ensuing 70 years of peace\, and to promote peace for our children and all future generations\, a grassroots level peace concert is planned onboard the USS Missouri; a potent and enduring symbol of the harmony that now exists  between Japan and the U.S. \nFew things can create a shared emotional bond\, so quickly\, and across such a broad diversity of people\, as music. And when we have shared emotional bonds\, it is difficult to vilify and undertake acts of violence or war against another person or country. The USS Missouri\, which was once an implement of war\, is now a foundation of peace. Sharing this concert aboard Missouri is an important symbol that we\, as followers of peace\, need to show to the rest of the world. Free event.

Despite his doctor’s diagnosis that he would never regain consciousness\, he is now able to communicate with the aid of electronic devices. Both Katsuko Yamamoto and the film’s director\, Yasuko Iwasaki\, will be joining us. DESCRIPTION:Please join our seminar at Hawaii Tokai International College by Ryōjun Shionuma\, only the second person in the 1000+ years of this extraordinary challenge\, rooted in ancient Japanese religious tradition\, to complete\, 1000 days of running a 48km sacred trail run/climb through the mountains of southwestern Japan. He is going to participate in this year’s Honolulu Marathon.\nSeating is limited. Students admission free; reserve your seat using order form below by Dec 7th\, 2014. \nAcharya Ryōjun Shionuma (Acharya is a senior teacher who has completed special practices) is well known in Japan since completing two of the most difficult ascetic practices of the Shugendō tradition: the Ōmine Sennichi kaihōgyō (One-thousand Days Trekking on Mt. Ōmine) and the Shimugyō (Four-fold Renouncing Practice: no sleeping\, eating\, drinking or lying down for 9 days). After finishing those rites\, he founded the Jigenji (Merciful Eye Temple) in a small village close to the city of Sendai. There\, he prays\, teaches\, farms\, participates in the activities of the village\, writes books\, and welcomes pilgrims. He regularly gives conferences in different parts of Japan\, as well as overseas.

SUMMARY:"Emotive Brain" Conversation with a Brain Scientist: Dr. Kenichiro Mogi
DESCRIPTION:“..\, the most profound enigma in considering the relation between the mind and the brain is that of qualia\, the subjective sensory qualities. …The individual\, very unique characters that accompany these sensations are so hard to understand\, to embed in the scientific world view.” The last enigma in Mind-brain problem by Dr. Mogi\nDr. Mogi has been searching for the relationship between the mind and the brain\, focusing on “Qualia”; the subjective sensory qualities – like the redness of red. During his first talk in Hawaii\, he will discuss his last enigma in the Mind-brain problem. The discussion will be in English (Part I) and also in Japanese (Part II). \nKenichiro Mogi is a Japanese brain scientist and Senior Researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories\, and a visiting professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He was born in 1962 in Tokyo and graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in science and law. Dr. Mogi earned a PhD with his thesis “Mathematical Model of Muscle Contraction.”After his post-doctoral study at Cambridge University\, he won the prestigious Kobayashi Hideo Prize for his book\, “Brain and Imagination” in 2005\, and also was awarded the Kuwabara Takeo Prize for the book\, “Now\, From Here to Everywhere”. He has published about 20 books\, including one in English. He has also served as a commentator with NHK’s “The Professional” since 2006.

One might say that the whole meaning of\nlife is inherently bound to the inevitability of death.\n“Happy Way to Die” by Dr. Hideko Suzuki\nMany people have shared their moment of death with Dr. and Sister\nHideko Suzuki. At this seminar\, Dr. Suzuki will share her wisdom & rich experience about how to cope\nwith death\, how to support and strengthen the bond between family and loved ones facing death. Please\njoin us in musing together on the subject of death\, which is\, simultaneously\, a musing about life. People from all over the world are drawn to “Ischia” seeking relief from the acute mental and physiological health problem caused by living in such a troubled\, stressful world. Ms. Sato provides food\, love\, heal-ing\, energy\, advice\, and hugs to people who seek her compassion. Her long commitment to social welfare and community based educational activities has earned her numerous awards from the International Soroptimist Society\, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in more than 120 nations around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Sachiko Adachi\, born in Tokyo and a graduate of Waseda University\, transcended conventional art concepts when she introduced her Cosmic Art to the world in the 1980s. \nMs. Adachi’s “12 Hitoe”; a 12-layered Kimono inspired by the medieval  Japanese court ladies’ era\, was featured at the 1988 Japan Expo in Los Angeles.  This marked the United States debut of Ms. Adachi’s Cosmic Art. \nIn 1993\, Ms. Adachi launched her own gallery Space Sachi\, in Tokyo.  Ironically and sadly\, Ms. Adachi passed away\, at age 47\,  just one day before the opening. Cosmic Art remains a strong influence in major art venues world today.. \n \nWe invite you to join us at The Art Board\, October 23-35\, to experience the world of Cosmic Art\, featuring the original works of Sachiko Adachi in a first-ever Hawaii showing. \n

SUMMARY:Naoki Nishimura Charity Peace Concert "Compositon for Hawaii"
DESCRIPTION:Born in Matsuyama\, Japan in 1949\, Mr. Nishimura is a graduate of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He was a composer of music for television and films before returning to his birthplace\, and becoming a lecturer at Ehime University.  Currently\, he composes from his studio in Kochi\, where he has been focusing on children’s songs\, among his other projects. \nIt was in November 1989 that he performed his first overseas concert at the Ovis Auditorium at the University of Hawaii. \nIn 1999 he was selected as musical director of the NHK special documentary\, “Journey of the Soul―88 Shrines of Shikoku”. During this global pilgrimage to 88 places touches by the     tragedies of history\, including Hiroshima\, Berlin\, & Pearl      Harbor\, he composed and performed requiems and musical prayers for peace\, concluding with his 88th performance at the “Unified Observatory” in the suburbs of Seoul\, Korea. \nIn 2007\, he was so moved by the Hokule‘a Voyage to Japan\, he composed a suite “Spiritual Voyage\, Hokule‘a ” to honor the vessel and its voyages for peace. \n

DESCRIPTION:Morio Matsui \n \nBorn in Toyohashi\, Japan in 1942\, Morio Matsui graduated from the Musashino College of Fine Arts (Tokyo) before continuing his training in France\, at the Académie Julian and later at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
