SUMMARY:Mieko Yorimasa: The World of the Tale of Genji - Demonstration of Jyuni Hitoe
DESCRIPTION:Reflections on The Tale of Genji…Japan is a country blessed with four seasons; seeking beauty in the changing seasons\, living in harmony with nature\, and treating nature as divine.  A unique culture of respect for nature has been practiced in Japan.  The Tale of Genji\, elegantly depicting the lives of court aristocrats in this culture\, was created by Murasaki Shikibu more than 1000 years ago in medieval Japan. The aesthetic of expressing seasonal change by layering colored clothing is called kasane no irome\, or Juni-Hitoe (twelve layered Kimono)\, and was cultivated in the Imperial court. \nOne of the ceremonies held in the Imperial Palace was “mogi”\, a rite of passage into adulthood for girls.  Princesses wear mogi clothing for the first time at around age 14. \nNoble families with a daughter held a large-scale mogi ceremony to announce that the girl was ready to enter court and get married.   Today we will demonstrate this ceremony. \nMs. Emiko Yorimasa\,  founded Wabunka Densho Kyokai (Japanese Traditional Culture Association) in 2002 to revive and perpetuate Japan’s traditional culture &  art; giving renewed vibrancy to the Japanese spirit as it is passed on to a new generation.                                                                  Ms. Yorimasa serves as Chairman of both the Wabunka Densho Kyokai and the Sowa Kimono Gakuin. She is also a Director at the Sowa Vocational Training School\, an institute specializing in all facets of kimono attire and culture. Additionally\, Ms. Yorimasa is a member of the National Kimono Skills Certification Committee of the Ministry of Health\, Labor\, and Welfare\, and is herself a certified examiner. She also serves as a Central Examination Committee member for the All Japan Kimono Dressing Consultation Association.  With over 50 years of experience\, Ms. Yorimasa is one of Japan’s preeminent experts in kimono dressing and etiquette\, performing demonstrations; not only in Japan\, but also in England\, Italy\, Belgium\, Hungary\, China\, and Taiwan. \n

SUMMARY:Master Kiyomoto Ogasawara: Ogasawara-ryu 850 years of Samurai Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The Ogasawara Family lineage can be traced back to the 9th century; the 56th emperor of Japan. Ogasawara Nagakiyo\, founder of the Ogasawara-ryu School\, had served the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate in 12 century as his instructor in the arts of Reiho (courtesy\, etiquette and protocol)\, archery\, and horse-mounted archery. Since then\, the Ogasawara family has instructed in those disciplines for Ashikaga\, and Tokugawa shoguns. The discipline has passed down from generation to generation within the Ogasawara Family.\nOgasawara Kiyomoto :Born in 1980 as the first son of Ogasawara Kiyotada\, the 31st Grand Master in Tokyo. At the age of three\, Kiyomoto began training for mounted archery (Yabusame). While in 5th Grade at elementary school\, he performed his first archer role in the Yabusame ritual dedicated to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. He performed Yabusame in Hawaii in 1996\, when he was 15. After graduating from Osaka University School of Engineering Science\, he obtained his PhD in neuroscience from Tsukuba University. In keeping with the Ogasawara family discipline\, “One should not make a living out of teaching Kyu-ho (Etiquette\, Archery and Mounted Archery)\,” he currently works at a pharmaceutical company researching medicines for the treatment of cancer while using weekends to pass on the inherited teachings of Ogasawara-ryu to the next generation. \nSeminar 1: Samurai Training\,  Seminar 2:Riuals & Yabusame

SUMMARY:Purification Ritual; Hikime-no-gi Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Hikime no Gi is an important ritual of the Ogasawara-ryu school\, in which those who have been trained and chosen by it use their skills in front of the shrine and in front of many people\, relying on the virtues of the bow and arrow to purify the world. It is performed as a Shinto ritual. Therefore\, in this ceremony\, there are many actions that show the heart to pray for world peace\, national peace\, family prosperity\, etc. In that sense\, it is held at the beginning of the year and the beginning of Shinto rituals. This ritual is performed at many major shrines; such as Omiya Hachimangu\, Sumiyoshi Taisha\, Kasuga Shrine\, Shimogamo Shrine\, Atsuta jingu. \nThis year\, for the first time in Hawaii\, 32nd Generation of Ogasawara Family\, Kiyomoto Ogasawara\, will perform this purification ritual for the people of Hawaii. Admission is free. Parking is limited.

SUMMARY:Manage Your Health on Your Own:Yawara Pole Walking and Seitai Bodywork Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Good news for those of you who may feel weak\, unstable\, or pain when walking! Eiichi Watanabe\, a foot specialist and judo sports therapist in Japan will be in town this November to give talks about self-health management to improve your condition.\nSince 1982\, Watanabe has practiced judo therapy at his Yoda Sekkotsu Clinic in Fujisawa City. After decades of clinical experience\, he realized the importance of healthy foot function for overall physical health\, and that led him to study podiatry in Australia in 2003.\nAfter returning\, he developed a unique clinical method combining techniques of podiatry and judo therapy\, incorporating the use of biomechanics and the invention of therapeutic walking poles inspired by judo balancing techniques. Today\, Watanabe is regarded as a pioneering foot therapist in Japan\, drawing patients from across the Tokyo area and far beyond.\nThe event will have two lectures (one on November 15 will include English interpretation) and four walking sessions using therapeutic poles. We expect light exercise in all classes\, so please dress comfortably. All sessions are free of charge except for the lecture on 11/14. \nPer Watanabe-sensei: “It’s important to be able to manage our own health by ourselves\, and I will show you some tips.” Let’s take this opportunity to learn ways to be healthier on our own!\nWebsite of Yoda Sekkotsuin Clinic:\nhttp://www.foothealth.jp/ Email: yoda@foothealth.jp

SUMMARY:Hawaii Premiere: A Droplet in the Galaxy-All from One
DESCRIPTION:They say that the people of Nepal\, who live in the Himalayas\, know the “Secret of the Universe”. This is a documentary film of my journey through Nepal in 2016. The purpose of my trip was to meet Geeta\, who had been my guide when I first visited the country back in 2005\, and to reclaim the special feeling that I experi-enced then. I had been profoundly moved by the way of life of the Nepalese people and dreamed about re-visiting this special place. How can they accept me so warmly: a foreign woman\, upon our first meeting?   -Director of the film\, Katsuko Yamamoto-

SUMMARY:Peace Concert On board USS Missouri: Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the end of WWII
DESCRIPTION:On this date\, in 1941\, war between the United States and Japan was triggered by the attack on Pearl Harbor. The war officially ended on September 2nd\, 1945 at ceremonies onboard the USS Missouri. To celebrate the ensuing 70 years of peace\, and to promote peace for our children and all future generations\, a grassroots level peace concert is planned onboard the USS Missouri; a potent and enduring symbol of the harmony that now exists  between Japan and the U.S. \nFew things can create a shared emotional bond\, so quickly\, and across such a broad diversity of people\, as music. And when we have shared emotional bonds\, it is difficult to vilify and undertake acts of violence or war against another person or country. The USS Missouri\, which was once an implement of war\, is now a foundation of peace. Sharing this concert aboard Missouri is an important symbol that we\, as followers of peace\, need to show to the rest of the world. Free event.
