Acharya Ryōjun Shionuma (Acharya is a senior teacher who has completed special practices) is well known in Japan since completing two of the most difficult ascetic practices of the Shugendō tradition: the Ōmine Sennichi kaihōgyō (One-thousand Days Trekking on Mt. Ōmine) and the Shimugyō (Four-fold Renouncing Practice: no sleeping, eating, drinking or lying down for 9 days). After finishing those rites, he founded the Jigenji (Merciful Eye Temple) in a small village close to the city of Sendai. There, he prays, teaches, farms, participates in the activities of the village, writes books, and welcomes pilgrims. He regularly gives conferences in different parts of Japan, as well as overseas.
